Step 1: Prepare the Layout
Open MS Word & Click ‘Blank Document’
Click the ‘Layout’ or ‘Page Layout’ tab
Click the ‘Size' tab and choose the appropriate size
Click the ‘Orientation’ menu on ‘Page Layout' tab for orientation selection
Click ‘Margins’ and ‘Size’ icons on layout tab for adjustments
Step 2: Incorporate Text
For Headings
Click Insert->Text Box->Simple Text Box
Type the headline and highlight it
Go to ‘Home’ tab for text formatting
Use Word Art from Insert Menu to make it attractive
For Normal Text
Click Insert->Text Box to insert text
Avoid using font size less than 24
Left-justify text & use proper spacing
Bold, Italic, and Underline text wherever necessary
Step 3: Embed Images
For Pictures
Click Insert->Pictures to add pictures
Resize the pictures as per suitability
Use good quality images (300 pixels per square inch)
Picture should have high resolution (JPEG)
For Shapes/Graphs
Click Insert->Shapes to add shapes
Prefer using 2D images than 3D
Resize and relocate the shapes by dragging the corners
Zoom-in and Zoom-out the poster for checking appearance
Step 4: Adding Background
Select Insert->Shapes->Rectangle
Drag cursor over the page & right-click to press ‘Fill’
Fill and outline colours as per requirement
Click ‘Send to Back’ and then ‘Send Behind Text’
In the case of dark background, choose a lighter font colour
Step 5: Final Cross-Check
Overview the poster for grammatical errors
Take care of errors related to punctuation, spelling, etc.
Edit the academic poster as per university guidelines
Check the flow of information
Step 6: Print & Export
Click Ctrl+S to save the poster
Click File menu->Print for hard-copy
Click File menu->Export for exporting document (PDF)
In the case of hard-copy, trim the poster well
Things to Keep in Mind for Designing Academic Poster
Use maximum of 2 fonts in poster
Use subtle colour and black in case the font is small
Leave 1/4-inch space around the edges
The font Helvetica/Helvetica Neue is highly recommended
