1945-1991
Objective:
We will learn how the US responded to Soviet aggression during the Cold War.

EQ:
What measures did the US take in response to Soviet aggression after World War II?

The era of confrontation and competition between the United States and the Soviet Union that lasted from 1945 to 1991.
It was a battle of democratic vs communist ideology.
Europe was split in half between the Democratic West and the Communist East
Europe becomes divided
George Keenan was the U.S. Ambassador to Soviet Russia who became the "father of containment."
Keenan's "Long Telegram" warned that the Russians wanted to spread communism throughout the world. 
The  Long Telegram was the document written by George Keenan that inspired the Truman Doctrine and the U.S. foreign policy of  "containment."
Containment- is the idea of keeping something from spreading outside its own borders.
The Truman Doctrine stated that the U.S. would protect democracies throughout the world.
The Truman Doctrine pledged that the United States would provide aid to stop the spread of communism.
Truman told Americans that it was America's duty to interfere and to contain communism and to keep it from spreading.
"It must be the policy of the United States to support free peoples who are resisting attempted subjugation by armed minorities or outside pressures."

The Soviets were trying to take control of Greece and Turkey because they were key nations for trade.
The first enforcement of the Truman Doctrine was in 1947 when the U.S sent military aid to Turkey and Greece to stop Soviet aggression.
The Truman Doctrine provided the basis for the "domino theory," or the idea that the USSR was bent on  military conquest of the world.
Domino Theory- was the belief that if a country fell to communism, others around it would as well.
