Jointly construct and discuss ground rules with students, valuing their ideas rather than imposing rules;

Don’t establish too many rules to start with if this notion is new to students; first focus on one dimension (e.g. listening) and then build from there;

Keep the rules under review and revise them over time;

Think about ‘sentence stems’ for practically enacting ground rules, e.g. “I (dis)agree with X because...”;

You could ask students to reflect on their own learning process: did hearing others’ viewpoints actually change their minds or help them to learn something new?
