What is an Academic Text?
Academic Texts have a specific purpose which is to inform, persuade and argue a specific point to the audience.

Academic texts are different from creative writing or personal narrative. 
What is a Non-Academic 
Text?
Non-academic texts are writings that are informal and dedicated to a lay audience. They are emotional, personal and subjective without any kind of research involving.
So what are the similarities and differences 
of academic and non-academic texts?
Similarities:
Both academic and non-academic texts aim for accuracy, and both use research, though the research behind non-academic texts tends to be much lighter and to focus more heavily on secondary sources than that behind academic texts.

Both types of texts are also alike in trying to reach as wide an audience as possible, though the assumption is that a non-academic text will reach a broader readership. Both will almost always (always, in the case of academic texts) cite sources and include a bibliography of some sort. Both are indebted, almost all of the time, to an academic tradition of integrity, and both try to build a coherent argument, even if it is a very simple one.
Differences:
The key difference between academic text and non academic text is that academic text is intended for the scholarly and the research community in society while the non-academic text is intended for the general public in society. While the academic text is formal and factual, the non-academic text is informal and personal. In addition, academic texts always contain citations, whereas non-academic texts may or may not contain citations.
