English Learners.

You're an English Learner if...

English is not your native language.
you didn't attend schools where all of your class subjects were taught in English.
You need to practice listening, speaking and giving presentations
in English.
You need to improve your English grammar and writing skills.
you need to prepare for college-level, or university-level, English classes.
But what if,

I already Completed English

classes in high school?

Many students have studied English before coming to De Anza.
De Anza's ESL assessment will tell you if you're ready for university-level English -OR- if you need ESL classes before English classes.
What is a

university-level

English class like?

You'll read English literature
(essays, poems, books, etc.).
You'll be expected to participate in group discussions about reading assignments.

You'll give presentations.

You'll write university-level essays and papers.

How is a

university-level

English class different from an ESL class?

An English class will NOT provide listening and speaking instruction.

An English class will NOT teach English grammar, spelling or vocabulary.

Now let's review the reassessment policies

For ESL

as long as you haven't earned a D, F, or No Pass (NP) Grade in ESL

you CAN retake the  ESL assessment one time within 6 months of taking your first assessment.
But, for English
you can only take the assessment one time.
So, those are the differences between ESL and English
at De Anza.
