What is electromagnetic surveying?
What is the method?

What is electromagnetic surveying?
This is a method of geophysical surveying that measures the conductivity of the ground beneath us by studying the response to an induced EM field
It can also be used to determine resistivity of the subsurface as this is the opposite of conductivity
Groundwater, certain minerals and certain geological structures are particulary conductive
What is the method?
A current is passed through a coil producing a primary magnetic field which induces eddy currents if the target body is conductive
These eddy currents induce a second magnetic field to be produced which are detected at the surface
From this the apparent conductivity can be worked out
What are the applications?
EM surveying can be applied to many fields ranging from-
Large scale studies such as regional mapping, aquifer recharge studies, mineral exploration and chemical contamination
These are often carried out by plane, helicopter or drone
Or small scale studies such as utility surveys, surveying building foundations and studying boundaries of foundations
Does it have any limitations?
The method of electromagnetic surveying  has some limitations including
There are lots of sources of noise including railway lines, electric fences, utility cables and pipelines
The penetration depth of the EM is limited by the conductivity of the surface layer
Also there can be distortion of magnetic fields in the subsurface
