It can be a word or a phrase that is used to be expressive or figurative rather than literal.

Simile
A simile is a figure of speech that directly compares two different things using the words "like" or "as."

examples of
simile:
Her voice is as sweet as honey.
He runs like the wind.
The baby’s skin is as soft as silk.
metaphor
A metaphor is a figure of speech that directly compares two different things without using "like" or "as." It states that one thing is another to highlight similarities.
examples of metaphor:
Her heart is a cold stone.
Time is a thief.
The classroom was a battlefield.
hyperbole
A hyperbole is a figure of speech that uses deliberate and extreme exaggeration to emphasize a point or create a dramatic effect.
examples of hyperbole:
I’m so hungry I could eat a horse.
She cried a river of tears.
The line at the coffee shop stretched for miles.
personification
Personification is a figure of speech in which non-human objects, animals, or ideas are given human qualities or characteristics.
examples of personification:
The sun smiled down on us.
The leaves danced in the wind.
The alarm clock screamed at me to wake up.
Simile - Comparing two things using like or as to show similarity.
Metaphor - Saying one thing is another to imply they share similar qualities.
Hyperbole - Using extreme exaggeration to make a point or add drama.
