-Many Castles vary in many ways in their layout but it was standard to have the main compound also known as the Honmar.

-The main compound is surrounded by the second compound and the third compound (ninomaru and sannomaru).

-Lord built gates at strategic points with a steep stone wall around the perimeter and a moat was added for extra protection.

Castles Comparison

Similarities Between Japanese and English Castles

- Consists of a moat it is a strategic defence features that prevents direct attacks

-Gates are commonly used in castles, but it's not just as an entrance feature. Predominantly the main gate was used as a trap to attackers.

-Concentric walls are surrounding the castle placed at equal distance for a layered protection. 
Differences Between Japanese and English Castles

-Medieval European castles were not very decorative they were very dull and grey due to the amount of stone used. While the Japanese castles were very well decorated with them having decorative items surrounding the castle.

-European castles over time changed drastically, while Japanese castles kept a succinct style. 
Castles Comparison

- To guard important strategic sites, such as ports or crossroads, and  always incorporated the landscape into their defense planning.
 Purpose of The Japanese Castles
-Castles were mainly  built during the wars in the Middle Ages for the purpose of protection and safety.
-The main keep of the castle also  stored food and weapons in case of prolonged and lengthy battles. 
Inuyama Castle
-Inuyama Castle is known as the oldest castle in Japan. Its construction was completed in 1440. Inuyama was famous for it being only privately owned castle in Japan.The castle was not entirely constructed from beginning. The main keep was actually moved here from a different castle which is known as the Kanayama Castle.

Gifu Castle was first built by the Nikaidō clan during the  early 1200s  during the Kamakura Period. Originally it was called Inabayama Castle. Gifu Castle has gone through a vast number of repairs over the course of several generations. Even though it was famous being a physically powerful castle, it was once taken over by trivial 16 men.
