Emily's Eatery
Health and Safety at Work Act 2015
New Zealand’s key workplace health and safety legislation is the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 (HSWA). Here at Emily's Eatery we are covered by the HSWA.

Workers, like you and me, should be given the highest level of protection against harm to their health, safety and welfare from risks that arise in the workplace. This can be done by eliminating or minimising the risks.
We want to ensure that everyone gets home happy, healthy and safely at the end of each work day!
Duty Holders Under the HSWA
There are four types of duty holders that have work health and safety responsibilities:
Persons conducting a business or undertaking (PCBU)

Emily's Eatery is a PCBU as we are a business.

Emily's Eatery must ensure the health and safety of our workers, and that other people are not put at risk by our work. This is called a ‘primary duty of care’.
Workers

A worker is any individual who carries out work in any capacity for Emily's Eatery. As an employee at Emily's Eatery you are a worker.

You must take reasonable care for your own health, safety and welfare and ensure that you do not impact the health, safety and welfare of others. 
Officers

Our officer is Emily as she holds a position that allows her to exercise significant influence over Emily's Eatery..

Emily must exercise due diligence to make sure that Emily's Eatery complies with its health and safety duties. 
Other persons at workplaces (e.g. our customers)

Other persons include people visiting Emily's Eatery for a meal or coffee.

Other persons at Emily's Eatery have their own health and safety duty to keep themselves safe and not cause harm to others.
Often, wellbeing is over looked when focusing on workplace Health and Safety.
Emily's Eatery prioritise mental wellbeing in the workplace!
Decision-Making and Responsibility
Emily's Eatery has a responsibility to manage risks to mental wellbeing and mental health, just like we do any other health and safety risk.

This includes making sure there’s no discrimination and taking steps to reduce work stress to prevent psychological harm.
This means that you, and each Emily's Eatery employee, should make well-informed decisions and to take care of their own wellbeing 
Emily's Eatery has a legal responsibility to manage risks to mental wellbeing and mental health, just like we do any other health and safety risk.

This includes making sure there’s no discrimination and taking steps to reduce work stress to prevent psychological harm.
What is Wellbeing?
Mental wellbeing is an important part of the working environment, and Emily's Eatery ensure that we provide a workplace that looks after the mental health and wellbeing of our awesome employees. 
The Neuroscience behind it:

Wellbeing stems from how you feel about yourself and your life, and it often changes over time.

Wellbeing is not a fixed ‘thing’. It is rooted in our neural circuits/brain. If we exercise our mind and practice our wellbeing skills, it will be strengthened.
Risk Aversion, Self-Care, Self-Esteem
What does this mean?
Risk Aversion

Being reluctant to take risks in the workplace due to the fear of uncertainty, fear of loss or anxiety.

Employee's shouldn't take unnecessary risks at work, if you are unsure, ask one of your colleagues. 
Self-Care

This is about looking after yourself, at work and at home, by developing good habits for your personal wellbeing.

The Five Ways to Wellbeing Toolkit is a great resource for self-care! 
Self-Esteem

Refers to having 'healthy self confidence' and feeling good about yourself.

There are triggers for deflating self-esteem, by identifying these, you will be able to lift your self-esteem

Try something new. Rediscover an old interest. Take on a new responsibility at work. 
Being physically active will improve your physical and emotional health. Go for a walk in your break or join an after work sports team.
