An Argumentative Fallacy

It's when a person stops attacking the other person's stance and talking points
What is an Ad Hominem?

And starts attacking the character of the person instead
From Latin, it translates to "you too"
What does tu quoque mean ?
The Ad Hominem tu quoque focuses on a specific type of attack on the person's characteristics
Going Deeper
The idea is that a person's argument is countered by their past actions that don't align with the ideals that they are arguing, therefore being a hypocrite
And Now
An Example
The clip starts with Jeremy Clarkson making an argument that Ford cars are very good
Explaining the Example
James May then recalls Clarkson's past comments about Ford vehicles, specifically about how he shamed them
May is calling out Clarkson's hypocrisy which is the Ad Hominem tu quoque fallacy in effect
Sometimes, it may seem like a valid reason to disagree with one's argument
Why is it a fallacy?
However, it is still considered a fallacy because it redirects the attention from the argument to the person's character
Plus, a person's past actions will not necessarily reflect how a person feels in the present, they may have changed their thoughts or learned from the consequences of their actions
The best way to counter this fallacy is to simply explain yourself and own up to your mistake
How Do You Counter It?
For example, in the clip shown previously, Clarkson owns up to the accusations by saying he was "young and foolish" and that he's "grown up a lot", therefore showing a change in character

The best way to avoid the fallacy is to focus on the argument and talking points instead of trying to accuse and blame someone's character
