What are chromosomal disorders?

structural

Monosomy
absence of one member of a pair of chromosomes
Chromosomal deletions
-  occurs when a piece or section of chromosomal material is missing

-  one break: terminal deletion

- two breaks:interstitial deletion

- A person with a deletion has only one copy of a particular chromosome segment instead of the usual two copies

Chromosomal duplication
occur when there is an extra copy of a segment of a chromosome
Has three copies instead of two
What causes chromosomal disorders?
How are chromosome disorders diagnosed?
Developmental delays- when your child does not reach their development milestone
intellectual functioning- when you have limitation of abnormal behaviour (reasoning, learning, problem solving, etc.)
Many genetic test can also identify disorders, such as karyotyping and microarray
